I have just read the news here today,
and it really struck me in a meaningful way
The young and the old and the meek and the bold
should really stop and think
what they're doing today...
In a world full of conflict and fact very vague
sometimes we suffer and must turn the page.
Doesn't matter your gender, your race, or your age.
What matters is that you aren't sending
the world down in a cascade.
Sometimes we humans are caught up in hate,
and shun out other humans because of a trait
and uses their taunts and bully and bait
so they'll put the different to a premature fate.
They say they do that to make their country great,
to put it in a secure happy fine state,
and in doing so they close up the gate,
and for a chance to war again, they'll eagerly wait.
They'll spew fiery breath, and scream for more death.
With sinister eyes, they smile and stare.
As if saying, ''You'll never belong anywhere.''
Rotten's their head
and their heart is dead
and they wish all others were too,
for all to look the same
if not, it's their chance to scream 'lame!'
and make others really feel blue...
We can build bridges, so why build a wall?
Come on! Let's unite and not bully at all.
ELA Writing assignment: Problems & Solutions
Pollution is a big problem nowadays, there's pollution in the land, water, and even air. Smoke and soot-stained rain sometimes fall down upon suburban cities. Animals swallow plastics and metals dropped in the wilderness. Texas-sized rafts of junk entangle dolphins, fish, and seabirds. Sometimes it seems impossible to fix, but there are ways to slow down and even reverse this pollution.
Air! We breathe it every day. The air around us is filled with oxygen, the life-giving gas that keeps us organisms going. Most animals can't survive without it, including us! But, some have come to notice that city air and the air around big factories has a stale and bitter twinge to it, while the air in the forests smells pure and sweet. The cause of this is from a phenomenon called 'aerial pollution'. Aerial pollution is where various pollutants, such as cigar smoke, car fumes, and factory smoke billow up into the air and stick around. Sometimes the blend of soot, dust, and smoke goes high up into clouds and condenses with raindrops and falls down as murky black water. This is known as 'acid rain'. Acid rain is not actually corrosive acid, but the name refers to its toxicity. The water may fall into different water-sources and contaminate it, making it unsafe to consume. That poisons the animals and plants that absorb the dirty solution.
There are a few things we can do to stop this. A gigantic part of the spread of this horrid air is big factories. Not all factories have to create smoke, they only produce smoke when they burn coal, natural gas, and other items that require burning, thus producing smoke inevitably. To stop making smoke or to reduce the bad effects, they can either filter the air out, use clean energy if possible, or even change their procedures entirely! You can stop buying from companies that pollute, and explain why you don't buy from them and why you want them to turn towards clean production alternatives. You can ask authorities like senators to put laws in place against pollution.
Smoking is not a major cause of areal pollution, but it still helps a little bit! In smoking, you literally breathe in and out noxious smoke, filled with nicotine. Nicotine addicts you to cigars. That is a horrible thing since the smoke in cigarettes causes many diseases, like cancer in the lungs and mouth. You can stop people from polluting the air with it by encouraging people to not smoke. If someone you know smokes, try to convince them to quit. Tell them about the dangers of smoking and what it does to themselves and the environment.
You can also call your senators and mayors and persuade them to put trees and plants around. The trees sort of 'purify' the air, making it safer and nicer to breathe. One big pollutant and greenhouse gas is carbon, which plants absorb to make energy. Carbon dioxide also has oxygen as a part of it, but the plants do not need that, so they just release the clean air out as 'waste'. That is why wild areas smell so nice; the plants are constantly purifying the air! Besides making the cities and towns smell fresher and healthier to breathe, the plants also add a lovely bit of color into the grey, white, and black cityscape. Flowers and flowering trees make people feel cheery. It has been proven that bright, happy colors make people feel better. Adding plants will make people feel healthy and happy!
Garbage is floating all over the ocean, washing up on beaches and collecting in absolutely gargantuan 'trash islands'. The largest trash island is the size of Texas! Animals come near the garbage and think that it's food. Sea turtles eat floating plastic bags, mistaking them for jellyfish. A plastic bottle could look like a fish to a pelican, and it could gulp it down. Big hunks of rubber could seem like a piece of blubber and get eaten by sharks. Animals don't have to eat the whole items for it to be horrible. Little bits can be just as awful! As trash floats around, they break down into very small granules called 'nurdles'. These nurdles get eaten by little fish, which get eaten by bigger fish, and so on. Eventually one of the contaminated fish ends up on our dinner plate, and we become part of the cycle too! Besides consumption, the litter can pose other threats besides being eaten and poisoning us and the animals. Straws get jammed gruesomely into animals facial orifices and get sucked into whale and dolphin blowholes. How do we stop this from happening!?
If you are swimming and find garbage, you can collect it and throw it in a bin or recycling can. If you can, take trash that you find on the ground and dispose of it as well. Tell your friends and family not to litter, and warn them about the consequences. Garbage isn't always in oceans, though. A lot of the garbage floes start from trash and waste being dumped in rivers, which lead to the ocean. Again, factories can cause this. Although, this always happens on purpose. Factories may choose to dump chemicals and trash parts inside rivers, oceans, and any other body of water. We must show that it's a crime to harm the environment in such a way! Again, contact authorities, sign petitions and stop buying from factories who pollute.
Pollution can be everywhere, and similar things to the ocean can happen on land. Some people drop trash on the ground instead of simply throwing it away! Animals again eat the litter and the litter can fall into other bodies of water and add to the ocean junk. The trash all over cities and towns can cause 'pests' to gather round and consume what food is left in the plastic, glass, and metal, or consume the litter themselves! Besides being harmful to the environment, litter just looks awful in general.
The easy way to not add to the problem is to just dispose of trash accordingly! At least hold them until you can dispose of them properly, instead of just dropping it on the ground. Again, convincing people to do the right thing is a key part. As with the others, make it a strict law that such littering would not happen. It will make the environment and our eyes happy!
Pollution is a big problem! It harms us, animals, and the environment as a whole. We need to reverse the effects of polluting in all ways! People need to educate others about such blasphemy and work out a way to stop it. Laws should be put in place to halt the effects, and projects should be launched to return the world back to good health. Let's keep our home healthy!
Well, I have a lot of things that I'm thankful for. I'm thankful for the universe (so that everyone can exist), my parents for making me exist and caring for me, thankful that I live in a nice place where I have housing and food to eat, and plants producing oxygen so we can breathe. . . Those are just the basics, there are a lot more things that I'm thankful for, like scientists and researchers trying to make the world a better place, environmentalists trying to keep our world safe, K12 OHVA for giving me an education, and all the amazing people trying to do things for the greater good. I am also thankful for things that don't directly relate to my well being and survival, that just correlate for entertainment. Besides all that, one of the things that I'm most thankful for is life itself! I look forward to all the adventures and epic journeys that it will throw at me!
* 21,000 die of hunger everyday.
7,665,000 people die of hunger every year. 1,250,000 of them are children.
The sad thing is, WE CAN STOP THIS! But for some reason, we just... choose not to, and don't push for our governments to stop wasting money on weapons and focus on helping the people wasting away from starvation. EVERY SINGLE DAY IN AMERICA ALONE... approximately one Rose Bowl Football Stadium is filled with perfectly good food! We could feed SO MANY PEOPLE with that! Personally, I think that a law should be put to make it illegal to throw away perfectly good food. If food is spoiled, that is ok. You can't feed someone harmful food and expect them to get better. If people distributed that football stadium sized heap of food (mind you, that is from America alone, every. Single. Day.) we could curb world hunger!
There is a catch, though. We have to persuade the governments to create such laws to stop the disposal of good food and push them to stop using funds on weaponry to kill and use it rather on things to give life, such as transporting medicine, food, etc. If we stop the weaponry issue, that will also stop hunger a little bit in itself. A lot of poverty and hunger is caused by conflicts! People wouldn't be able to work and learn normally in conditions where every second they are fearing for their lives. Stopping war and stopping constant funds FOR war will help with lowering poverty. Using the war funds to fund more peaceful and humanitarian cause would be much better for humanity.
Another catch, corrupt leaders and weapon manufacturers don't want this. They want to keep wars going for power and money. If we can stop or persuade them, maybe we could take those daily Rose Bowl-sized heaps of food and feed people wasting away with it!
We need to stand up, to inform, and to take action! We can't stop people from doing bad things without doing anything. We can't make people do good things without doing anything. We need to take action, or hunger and poverty will keep rising!
Animal Intelligence Research Paper (By: Iris Johnson)
Why Bird Brain Should be a Compliment!
“Birdbrain! Birdbrain!” Someone shouts the insult to you as you walk down the street. At first, you feel annoyed and upset, that person is literally calling you stupid, right? Not really. Stop and consider the corvid family. Corvids are birds including Crows, Ravens, Magpies, and even Bluejays. They are famed for being intelligent birds, showing problem-solving abilities, even using mirrors for their benefit. Some corvids, like magpies, can mimic sounds like parrots and learn human words and phrases. Corvids have been observed playing and experimenting. They have shown to have emotional attachments to the people who raise them. Of course, we cannot speculate an animal is smart or daft just from a few tricks. A dog could sit, stay, and roll,
but the same mutt could also be terrified of a yellow rubber duck.
How intelligent are corvids, really?
Researchers and spectators have witnessed the New Caledonian crow poking grubs in holes with twigs, forcing the grubs to bite onto the twig so it can pull it out. Others take strips of serrated leaves to hook insects out of their holes. They have been observed even making the tools, taking twigs and carefully pulling out and bending certain parts to make a sharp and functional hook to yank the grub out! Not even chimpanzees have been observed (yet) making such intricate tools. Such tool craftsmanship must take up a powerful brain!
Mirror, mirror, on the wall! Who is the most intelligent bird of them all? The crow, maybe! Speaking of mirrors, New Caledonian Crows have again been observed being smarty pants! Scientists have placed four crows in front of mirrors. At first, the crows started to freak out at the weirdo copying their every move, but when they went behind the mirror they realized that it wasn't another crow- it was their reflection! Once the researchers noticed this, they put a treat inside a box. The crows could only see the treat if they saw it in the mirror- and all of them did indeed realize that the treat was not inside the mirror, but where the mirror reflected! This is not only self-recognition but tool use as well! Another amazing feat from the New Caledonian Crows.
Besides New Caledonian Crows, crows and ravens in NYC have proven to pass down information to their chicks and recognizing human faces. Researchers tried to see if crows could recognize human faces. One person put on a mask and spooked the crows. He kept doing this until the crows all scolded and screeched whenever they saw him. This did not work with other people who haven't harassed the crows, and when the masked person hides and takes off the mask and returns, the crows react as normal. No scolding, no negative response, just the usual neutral but still wary reaction. Year after year, when someone passes by wearing the mask, the crows go haywire! This kept on going for years, proving that crows tell each other and their chickies about information and can recognize and remember the faces of humans.
A lot of people abhor magpies for their screechy screams, but besides squawking, magpies, not unlike parrots, can mimic human speech! If trained as a little chick, Magpies can pick up words and phrases in a human language! Their talking skills aren't as spiffy as a parrot, and most can't learn tons and tons of words, but it still is amazing! A specific magpie named George has learned many words. She can say things from “What does a duck say, quack quack?” to “Come here!” She says the words fluently and fast, one phrase after another. Magpies must have good memory and vocal skills to be able to remember and repeat things like those!
Corvids are an absolutely amazing family of birds! From their speedy chatters to facial recognition, and their use of mirrors and sticks as tools is simply amazing! I think it's pretty fair to say that they are one of the most intelligent family of birds. So, next time, be proud when someone calls you a bird brain, and take a pause to marvel at your local smart-alecks, the corvids!
Many of you reading this may have experienced bullying or are still going through it. Many of you have threatened to tell on a meanie and have been called a 'tattler' 'tattletale' or 'snitch'. Seems like a bad thing, right? Not a bit!
There's a major difference between Tattling and Telling. When you tattle, you make a lie or fake report about someone, blaming them for something you did / or something nobody did at all. It's like when somebody drops a jug of milk in a cafeteria, and some bully goes saying that the person threw a tantrum about the food, breaking the milk in a hissy fit. Bah! That is a shameful thing for someone to do, villainizing someone's honest mistake and making them get punished for it.
Telling on someone is different, it's when you stand up for yourself or others by telling to authorities, like a teacher or parent. Bullies often try to convince you that you're tattling and snitching, but that isn't true. You aren't saying an innocent person is bad just for a laugh, you're standing up by reporting something mean! It isn't a cowardly move, it's a brave one! A 'cowardly' move would be abiding by the chokes, spits, and burbles of 'HUEEH, ITS A TATTLETALE!'
Stand up! Be brave! Show that you aren't the coward they say you are for telling.
Thank you for reading this, happy Anti Bullying Month! =^w^=
More than 2,000 innocent children have been separated at the United States border at Trump’s command.
The parents have been lied to about the locations of their children and given fake ‘find your children’ numbers.
The children have been sleeping on cheap mattresses on a concrete floor with only cellophane blankets.
If a group of strange men and women took your children and placed them in a place like that, cold and in a place with an uncanny similarity to a prison camp, how would you feel?
Many say that being separated, isolated, cold, hungry, and heartbroken is healthier for the children, that it is like a summer camp.
In summer camps, children are there because they want to be there. They eat hot food, sleep in warm beds, and can talk to their parents whenever they want.
This is the opposite of summer camp.
It is a slow death.
Does this sound like science fiction, like some sick horror story of the future? If you thought it was, (probably not) it is, indeed, real. *Screams* this is basically kidnapping! They are forcing mothers and fathers to give up their children to a bunch of random strangers! Why would people even allow this!? “HUUUEHHH Mexico is FULL of PEDOBEARS and KIDNAPPERSSS.” Well, it seems like the opposite for them… we are the kidnappers.
Who would think that heartbreak, suffering and separation anxiety would make children happy? It’s not like you are taking ‘school is stupid, we want more toys’ brats and placing them in a bouncy castle full of stupidly expensive toys and video games, no-no-no-no-no. You are ripping close family bonds apart.
People are just permitting this because such child abuse is being carried out by their leaders. Why!? Why do people do this? Just because it’s a person in power who made the decision doesn’t mean EVERYTHING that they say is good and kind.
People can be strange like this. Why can’t we stand up against what is wrong? Why do our thoughts of what is good and evil get clouded by the status of the people who act them out? We should just judge by actions, not by looks or statuses.
Aren’t we supposed to love our neighbors as ourselves? Aren't we taught in school to treat all who are different equally? It seems we have a lot of wolves in sheep’s clothing in our leadership…
My solution to this problem is simply to put aside our differences. We’re all part of the human race, aren't we? Let’s not judge people by their ethnicity, what country they live in, and the color of their skin. We should just be kind and fair to one another.
Personally, I think that war is not a good thing at all! We are one human family, homo sapiens sapiens, and we should not kill each other like spiteful microbiomes of bacteria! We're not lions, who kill each other to survive, we are humans who have persuasion and trading, we don't need to take goods or spread ideas by force! If humans are supposed to be so smart, why are we using war instead of peaceful methods anyways?
Many countries spend lots of money on producing weapons and explosives instead of... oh, I don't know, ACTUALLY HELPING THEIR CITIZENS? Why don't world leaders who were voted by their people to make their country better try to fund medical research, scientific innovations, making food cheaper and available, or lifting people out of the poverty line? Heck, some war-torn COUNTRIES have 80% OF THEIR POPULATION IN POVERTY! HOW CAN FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS JUST LET THIS SLIDE? WE NEED TO WORK TOGETHER TO MAKE COUNTRIES LIKE THOSE BETTER FOR PEOPLE TO LIVE IN! AFTER ALL, WOULDN'T IT BE BETTER FOR THE COUNTRY AS A WHOLE TO HAVE HEALTHY, EDUCATED PEOPLE INSTEAD OF DYING, STARVING CITIZENS? :(
Oh, it controls the population you say? Well, that's false! In the past, deaths were common. Disease and starvation were killing people left and right. Birth rates went up to make sure AT LEAST one child survived to adulthood. But as places modernized and sanitation became safer, fewer people were dying. Guess what happened next? Birth rates went out the roof! The population was shooting high, but slowly birth rates started to go back down. Triplets and twins were rarer. Soon, the population will be completely stable. The population will control itself! Even if it couldn't, that's still no reason to make people suffer and die. That is just a cruel thing to do! With that in mind, humans should stop killing each other and start helping each other.
If we are all human beings living in the same home, planet earth, why can't we just get along? Why can't we just put our differences aside and just love each other for who we are? Why do we cause suffering to each other for no reason? We all should just give peace a chance. It would make the lives better for everyone. ( ◕ヮ◕) ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
I've been checking out and watching different movements where kids are involved. I am sooo inspired by them and want to do something good for all earthlings; that includes not just humans but also animals, trees, microbes, plants, maybe hiding aliens among us. Well, heck, let's include the universe, let's keep outer space un-polluted as well.
Anyway, I've been watching 'Young Voices for the Planet' (https://www.youngvoicesfortheplanet.com) and it's awesome! My fellow kids fighting for a cleaner world, greening our planet, feeding the hungry, standing up for equality and human rights and so on... I also discovered 'Green Fingered George' who is in love with the plant world. Me too! Yes, Kids Can Do! Wooohooo!
So... Me, Myself & I, did a lot of thinking and in talking, some mumbling, and more thinking plus reading and researching about these amazing peers who are already on the move for a wonderful future! The decision is made! I will do my part as well and do what I can and use whatever talent I have. I actually have been doing good stuff but, now I just have more of a purpose for them.
I've been working on my illustrations for my coloring book for the past few months now as I plan to enter the b u s i n e s s world. Once I begin selling it, I'll collect $3 from each book sold to go to certain Earthling Causes!
I will have a can that I could put all the causes I'd like to support written in pieces of paper, and every month I will roll it, toss it and shake it around, then draw one or two rolled up Causes, to fund for that month. The funded Causes for that month will then be dropped in another can to make sure and in the name of FAIRness give a chance for other causes to get funded as well. Then I will face each day with a clear conscience knowing that I did not show any favoritism towards any. EQUALITY FOR ALL!
I really think that I would be helping the planet this way. I hope that someday it will be 100% of my Coloring Book's proceeds that will go to positive, kind, loving, peaceful and progressive Causes. Like Paul Newman who makes 'green' pizzas and donates 100% of its proceeds to Charities. I don't mean he literally make green colored pizzas, but rather, he uses organic ingredients. Yummylicious! So, that's my goal.
I'll be launching this Coloring Book dream at KICKSTARTER! "Why Not!" says my parents who always let me soar away with any ideas that I come up with as long as it's not hurting myself or others.
Hey, everybody can dream... but I have an inkling that this one will come true! Woohooo.! Every little bit of help from YOU, can go a long way! Wanna join me? Let's hitch our hover-boards to some stars! 'Know anyone?' ٩(▰ᴗ◕)۶
Many people make the argument that war is sentimental in human nature. After all, lions are harming each other in unexplainable ways each day! Although, this can be disproved quickly.
Lions; for example, have war encoded into their genetics. If that lion over there tries to take your pride, you need to fight him off! They don't know what a peace treaty is, nor trading, or justice. All they know is it's kill and eat or starve, kill or die, kill or be driven out. They cannot grasp that there is something other than pure survival and passing on their genes. Humans, on the other hand, have all these things.
Humans trade goods and services using currencies. Those currencies can be traded for more goods and services. Doing so is much simpler than just taking those by force. Making weapons and armor is expensive, and, after all, land may be purchased. Although, goods and land are not the only reason for war.
Political and religious reasons for war are usually what most wars currently are about. These are also optional. In the case of politics, you may try to persuade one to be on your side. Although, there is an exception. If the person/people you are trying to persuade are doing outrageous acts of murder and cruelty (e.g. Adolf Hitler) they should not be forgiven. If one is causing unnecessary pain and suffering towards innocent beings, they should be stopped. In some cases, they cannot be persuaded.
Religious reasons for war are a tad bit similar. If you want to get people to join your religion, you must persuade them kindly. Using force and murder would only make them fear and hate you. There are people who cannot be persuaded. They should be left alone.
In conclusion, humans do not really need conflict. Why don't we just set our differences aside and give peace a chance? :)
Why You Should Not Judge Scary or Meat Eating Animals
(By: Iris B.J.)
Many people stamp at the sight of a spider, yell when they see a little snake or start charging to throw their flip-flops at that tiny house centipede sleeping under a rock. It may seem reasonable to those people, but from another view, it just looks all out silly and unnecessary.
Chances are that you may have a phobia of some sort of dangerous or scary creature. After all, a big percent of the population has one. It’s good that you respect these creatures and give them their space, but hating them with such a passion is not an option. I know lots of people who say that rattlesnakes, spiders, crocodiles, etc. should go extinct because they are ‘too dangerous’ or ‘scary’. Sometimes just seems that they do not care for animals that are not ‘cute’ or ‘cool’. Here are reasons why you should not be like those people.
No animal without an interest in eating you would be happy to kill you. It is common sense that animals would defend themselves when frightened and that nobody would want to be stepped on. If a snake bites you for frightening it, you should feel bad for frightening it and getting bitten, and not call it ‘evil’ for protecting itself.
You cannot even blame animals for eating cute things. It is very shocking and depressing when that bobcat eats your budgie, but that bobcat must be hungry/have kits to feed. Wild animals do not hunt for fun usually, because all food is precious in a world where you are searching for your next meal every morning. (Not-so-fun-fact, domestic cats' and dogs are more likely to hunt for fun)
A very important fact is that ALL ANIMALS HAVE A PLACE. If all rattlesnakes go extinct, rodent populations would go out of control. If all wolves went the way of the dodo, their main food source, elks, would eat all of the plants, leaving a barren wasteland in their wake. As a matter of fact, this has happened before in Yellowstone national park. Farmers with a ‘carnivores should go extinct’ mindset killed off more than 90 percent of all wolves to ‘protect elk and sheep’. This destroyed the ecosystem, and until wolves were re-introduced into Yellowstone, the plant and elk populations were dying off.
And to top it off, animals that look scary aren’t always dangerous. Some spiders do not have venom and would rather scamper off instead of face a predator. Snakes that are unable to eat humans fear us like we fear them.
Also, humans are encroaching on animal territory. More wild animals are raiding farms and lurking in towns and cities as they expand. If humans would just stay where they are and not be building big factories in the middle of forests and turning it into a big concrete wasteland, then they wouldn’t have to face raccoons and bears running around at every turn.
In conclusion, we should respect animals and not hate or despise them, or wish they go extinct. Every animal has their place in the world, and have their own little lives to live. We should respect all animals, and be reasonable in our decisions.
The Science of Gullible Humans (◕n◕)
By Iris Benjamina
People are too gullible these days. From vaccine deniers or people thinking those ‘sauna pants’ ads are really effective, you can tell that humanity certainly is drinking the muddy water instead of the tea.
It has to do with the way our brain works. Humans have a sort of ‘thought bubble’ in which they seem to think. If someone was taught that medicine can cause certain diseases, then the false fact that all vaccines give autism (which, unsurprisingly, is a neurological problem, not caused by a virus/bacteria/parasite etc…) fits into their bubble.
If something does not fit into their bubble, then it would either be excluded or not taken seriously, but most of the time it gets rejected.
Everyone has some sort of a bubble, some bigger than others. A way to expand your bubble is to research the facts, and not swallow anything you hear and despise anything that does not coincide with what you hear. Listen to more views on a subject, and be more open-minded.
For example, I used to be a proud supporter of PETA, (people for the ethical treatment of animals), and reject the knowledge that most animals put into their care get put down with euthanasia due to the fact that PETA spends more money on ads than actually caring for the animals. It did not fit into my bubble of thought. But after delving deeper into research, I realized that PETA isn’t such a great organization to fund. I read many articles and listened to other people’s arguments. I even listened to an article written by the PETA organization. Finally, I came to the conclusion that PETA was not a fair, nice place for animals to be.
Humans are gullible, it’s fair to see.
For we all have our bubbles, even you and me.
If it doesn’t fit, they say it cannot be,
And pick rotting lies from the gullible tree.
THE END (◕ヮ◕)
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (by J.K. Rowling), A Book to Behold
Hello! In this book review, we look at Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third book in J.K. Rowling’s wand-waving, Dementor-destroying series! Prepare for plot twists, spookiness, mystery, and more in this thrilling, and sometimes frightening novel!
J.K. Rowling has won many awards for her 7 Harry Potter books. Because so many people adore the series, movies have been created about her books! She has many fans world-wide, and is very famous. Yet, she does not let her fame get to her head! She donates millions of dollars each year to certain charities and humanitarian works. It is understandable why, as before the first book was even written, she was experiencing tough times. The death of her mother was followed by conceiving her first child and the divorce of her first husband, and she was left as a single mom in poverty. Luckily, after the first book was published, she became stable, and even rich and famous, using her money to help save lives.
The main characters in the book are Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Harry’s good friend Ron is superstitious, easily believing myths of death omens and fortune telling. (Hermione thinks that kind of belief is very woolly.) Ron wishes to be famous and well-known. Hermione loves to learn new things, whatever the subject is. (As long as it’s reliable) She can be a sassy know-it-all at times, but she loves to help people do well on tests. Harry, the true main character, was orphaned as a baby. The wicked Lord Voldemort killed off his parents, as they did not join his army of evil humans just like the cruel wizard himself. When Voldemort tried to kill Harry too, but failed, harry got a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead.
In this award winning installment to the series, Harry starts off at the Dursleys. Plain, old, mean Dursleys. Even worse, Aunt Marge is visiting, oh no! Marge rudely insults Harry’s deceased parents, and before Harry knows it, Aunt Marge inflates like a balloon! Harry leaves the Dursley’s as fast as he can, but sees a dark, dog-like figure staring at him… He steps closer with his wand as a light, but the Knight Bus nearly runs him over! He boards the bus, and heads to the train station… what happens next? Read the novel to find out!
Ooh, on the topic of reading the book, I particularly enjoyed it. Although it seemed dark and depressing at times, there were a lot of memorable moments. I enjoyed the part where Harry got a brand new Fire-Bolt broom for Christmas. Harry and Ron were ecstatic, but Hermione was quite worried, and reported to Professor McGonagall that it may be cursed. There are the parts where I get a little bit upset about certain characters. I always get annoyed when professor Snape gallivants over and takes points from Gryffindor for actually doing things right! I cannot say that I was surprised by the plot twist. I have too many spoilers for my own good, watching the movies before reading. It kind of destructs the whole point of the ‘shocking plot twist’ part of the book. Here’s a warning for all you nerdy readers like me, don’t watch the movies before reading the books.
The novel itself is amazingly well written. Each sentence is descriptive and clear, and tells you exactly what is happening. J.K. writes each paragraph with feeling, and adjectives and adverbs describe everything neatly and beautifully. This book is a spectacular book for the founding writer.
Due to the dark plot twists and spooky moments, I’d say that this book would be age 10+, or just for anyone that can handle reading that a bear-sized dog attacked Ron. No cuss words or inappropriate things present, this book is perfectly fine for children.
I’d give Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban a splendid five out of five! In summary, this book is a must-have for all magic loving people. Well, it’s time for us to mount our brooms and fly off to our libraries and pick up some books! Err… But you shouldn’t fly around like that in a muggle (non-magic) library, that’s for sure!
I have just viewed a talk about Fusion Reactors, but in my opinion, Fusion Reactors are too costly and risky to make. Although Fusion Reactors are very safe, we do not know if building a sun on earth would work.
We already know solar, wind, and water energy is very reliable. For one, the sun is always shining, and on cloudy days we can rely on other natural energy. Windy days are not uncommon, and if the wind isn’t blowing as much, the water is always flowing. Unless all the water suddenly evaporates on earth, we’ll have power from water for millennia!
Another reason to stick with things we already have, Fusion Reactors is costly. We don’t know how to even make one that works well yet! It’s a task of highly expensive trial and error. If we fail, we have just wasted billions of dollars on a useless chunk of machinery. After that, we must spend more money and time taking it down to recycle. I am not saying it won’t work, but we just have easier and reliable sources, too.
Those are my reasons why I do not think we should start building Fusion Reactors right away. We must make sure it is something that we can really make foolproof, and if it fails we wasted the money and time, but need to use more money and time to take it apart.
Many years ago, in the time of knights, kings, and fancy-prancy nobles, there lived a knight named Saint George. He was braver than most, yes, but he was so narcissistic and prideful that many people called him Sir Proudy. Although, they never say that when he is near, for he would berate them and yell at them until they take back what they said. Ouch!
Beggars would shy away whenever he is near in fear that they would be accused of being thieves. Animals, even the lovely harmless ones, like squirrels and beautiful deer dare not go near in the town where Sir George lives. Those who do, many times, are shot for sport and stuffed for a trophy room. Nobody plays with the little stray cats and dogs, he stuffs them as well. Even the sheep and cows and horses in the farms, he takes those too.
Miles away from that jerk knight lived a dragon and a princess. The dragon was sweet and gentle, formed soft from being raised as a hatchling by a kindred royal family. The dragon, who could shape-shift into a man, fell in love with a princess, and they were soon to be married. But the dragon was disturbed, what if his wife did not accept him for who he was, a feathered and scaled beast? He didn't think of himself as a beast though, but she might! Feeling determined, he gathered courage and told her. He grew back into his true form to show he wasn't lying. The princess shook her head and smiled. "I love you," she reminded, "even if you were a plucked and one-legged meat chicken, I would still love you."
Remember that old oaf, Saint George? Well, he heard about that. He did! Off he goes, plop plop plop. Marching to the dragon and princess's castle. He knocked on the door. No response. He took a rock and tried to smash the door open. Nothing. He took a pin out from his hair and began to pick the lock. Who am I kidding? He isn't that smart! He toiled day and night using the pin to carve a hole into it! Once he did, he jumped in. "I AM SAINT GEORGE!" He shrieked, "I AM HERE TO KILL THAT BLOODY TURKEY!"
"Diddly darn gosh darn it, It's time to go!" muttered the dragon-prince.
he carefully opened the balcony with his clumsy claws and stuck his head out. Too late! Sir Proudy jumped onto the prince's back and stabbed him. With the pin. THE PIN. Well, that was a magic pin, but still! He didn't know that! He's still nonsensical. Uh- anyways, back to the story. Well, the pin made the dragon crumple into a sad heap of hopes and dreams, which Saint George carried to the lavatory. You guessed it, he flushed it down. It clogged it though, so SHAME ON YOU GEORGE! He took the sad, sobbing princess and jumped out of the balcony into the moat. His submarine was there waiting for him, and he entered. The toilet system exited into the moat, and the water revived the dragon. Sooo... he pried open the top and sticked his claw in, trying to take out George. George still had the pin though, so no happy ending for now. He put the submarine on autopilot and drove it out of the water and into the trees. "I AM YOUR HUSBAND NOW!" He screamed in the princess's face as he shook her. But this wasn't your ordinary "help me help me I can't fend for myself and just sit around being pretty" princess. She threw off her dress. SHE WAS A BLACK-BELT NINJA! She took out her katana. (ninja sword) George still had the pin though. he disintegrated the katana. She took out shuriken and threw them at him. Well, he was an overpowered Gary Stu (overpowered and generally over-perfect character), so his unicorn rainbow armor turned those into glitter.
Five days later, they arrived. Apparently, while they were driving through the trees, they weren't driving THROUGH the trees, they were just stuck inside one. They also had no gas, so they had to fly. They were now at George's SECRET EVIL BASE THING! George smashed his entire body into the door ten times. The doors fell down, and they entered. Well, the dragon-prince lived again because of the water, so he was there first. "I'm here to kill the bloody turkey," The prince said cooly. He took saint George and threw him out of the window. STILL BEING A GARY STU, he came back. with more pins. Hundreds, thousands, MILLIONS OF PINS! Then the fairy stepmother came and made the pins be useless, unless George touches them, then he will disintegrate. "I don't feel so good," George said as he turned into a pile of dust. "I SAID I DON'T FEEL SO GOOD!" he screamed again. The dragon swept up the dust and melted the pins with his fire and turned them into a plaque which he placed where George's dust was. "Here lies Sir Proudy, arrogant, angry, always screeching, but most of all, nobody likes him because he was mean."
The princess and dragon-prince got married soon after, and everyone lived happily ever after. Livestock could roam and play in the fields where George used to live. Squirrels, birds, and all sorts of wild animals returned to the forest. The poor were helped until they could survive on their own. All was well.
